Since this is my first attempt at carpentry i was unaware to just how heavy and awkward it would be to manouver these sheets though i soon found out.
Plywood or chipboard for shed roof.
More product details close.
Plywood sheathing delivers outstanding rigidity strength and versatility and is an excellent choice for light frame wall and roof assemblies in weather protected applications.
On saturday i collected a couple of 18mm sheets of plywood.
However there are some sceptics out there who doubt the strength and durability of osb.
Im not a roofing contractor but ive seen my share and i would not use ply wood on a roof i have seen it bow and buckl time after time thats old school now most commonly used is 3 4 5 8 advantec t g or 5 8 osb they sell it up here for roofing it strong and wont buckl but if you can spend the extra advantec is the way to go you can leave it out side for ever and it wont swell or rott tuff.
Replacement shed roof osb or ply.
Up until 2000 plywood held the majority of the market for wall roof and floor sheathing when it was surpassed by osb which as of 2018 held about 75 of the market share.
If you do add new plywood sheathing you could just tape the joints and it will act as your air barrier.
Even though plywood is more expensive and osb stronger my recommendation for a shed roof is 5 8 or 3 4 construction grade exterior rated cdx t g plywood.
Wickes used to do bitumnen faced plywood otherwise use shuutering ply wear gloves and eye protection when cutting it spits quite bad as for osb.
If you are sticking with the original sheathing or boards if that s what it had i d suggest adding a vapour permeable membrane over top as an air barrier.
Plywood with similar properties currently costs about 30 more for an equivalent thickness.
Plywood is made with an odd number of layers for optimal strength and performance.
The lower the slope the more weight for snow load but less wind force.
Using oriented strand board is a tested way of reducing costs for building your shed.
Osb is okay but plywood handles moisture a bit better.
It can withstand moisture for a brief period of time but may become warped and delaminated with consistent exposure to the elements.
Due to requiring extra tools for cutting the sheets to size the roofing job for the shed hasn t been completed.
Could it be that these people have inadvertently used the wrong grade of material.
The higher the slope the more quickly the snow and rain will be shed but also the greater the wind force.
